The variety Jonathan was discovered in 1826 in the state of New York and is presumed to be a seedling of the variety Esopus Spitzenburg. The tree is characterized by moderate vigor and has a spreading, branched crown. The variety possesses high susceptibility to powdery mildew and scab, which requires regular protective measures.

The fruits are of medium size and range in shape from spherical to conical, often with slight ribbing. The skin is thin, yellow, covered with an intense dark red blush or stripes. The white or yellowish flesh is distinguished by a tender, fine-grained structure and juiciness. The variety matures in September–October and possesses good keeping quality.
