In pomological literature, the name Korallenapfel acts as a synonym for the heirloom apple variety Alexander, also known as Aport. The fruits of this variety have a firm, rather coarse, dry, and acidic flesh with a very faint aroma and belong to the culinary/table type.

In modern usage, this name more often refers to the species Malus floribunda. It is a tree or shrub grown as an ornamental plant due to its abundant flowering and small coral-red fruits, which often remain on the branches. It is used in landscaping, as a rootstock, or as a pollinator.
