The variety is an old German heritage cultivar, known since before 1850 and originating from Mecklenburg. It has many synonyms, including Krügers Dickstiel, Woltmanns Renette, and Farbenschachtel, with the latter name indicating the variety of color shades on the fruit skin.

The tree is characterized by moderate to strong growth with a highly domed crown, which acquires a weeping form over time. The variety has high resistance to soil and climatic conditions, including good winter hardiness and the ability to withstand late spring frosts. Flowering is late and prolonged, covering the period from May to June.

The fruits are suitable for long-term storage and are traditionally used as a dessert apple.
