The Mendiola variety, known in the region as Mendiola sagarra, is a local Basque variety that has been cultivated in Spain for a long time. It does not belong to the products of modern industrial breeding and represents a part of the regional heritage.

This variety is classified as industrial, intended for the production of cider. Its fruits are valued for quality characteristics suitable for creating blends of local beverages. Mentions of these apple trees are found in historical documents dating back to the 15th century.
