The historical variety Doppelte Melone is a triploid hybrid derived from crossing the Prinzenapfel variety. The tree grows weakly in its youth, with its vigor increasing over time. The variety is intended for cultivation in Streuobst-type orchards, with the fruit ripening period occurring from September to November.
The fruits of this variety are characterized by their large size and green-yellow coloring with a red blush. The flesh of the fruits is loose, yellowish-white, juicy, sweet-and-sour, and aromatic. The fruits are used for dessert and culinary purposes.
In commercial catalogs, the name Melone is often erroneous or a marketing term, referring to other apple varieties or other crops, such as the melon pear Solanum muricatum.
