The name serves as a synonym for a group of varieties united by a characteristic fruit shape or an aroma reminiscent of a melon. The most frequent correspondence is the Prinzenapfel variety, known since the 18th century, sometimes also called Hasenkopf or Walzenapfel. In some cases, the name refers to the Doppelter Melonenapfel variety, which is a larger triploid form, or Weißer Winterkalvill.

The trees are described as medium-sized and resistant to adverse weather conditions, but can be susceptible to apple tree canker. The variety is an autumn one, with harvesting conducted in September–October. The fruits have an elongated, cylindrical, or oval shape, with smooth yellowish-green skin with a reddish blush or stripes.

The flesh of the fruit is whitish or yellowish-white, juicy and tender, with a sweet-and-sour taste and a specific aroma. The fruits are used fresh and for culinary processing.
