Variety description

The variety is a hybrid of the Hammerstein and Baumanns Renette varieties. The tree grows with medium vigor at a young age, and growth becomes weak during the period of full fruit-bearing. The crown is well-covered with fruit-bearing twigs, which require regular rejuvenation pruning. It is recommended to train the variety as a spindle-bush dwarf or grow it on trellises.

The fruits are medium-sized, round or blunt-conical in shape. The skin is smooth, oily, golden-yellow in color with red speckles and stripes. The flesh is whitish-yellowish, medium-grained, brittle, and the taste is sweet-and-sour. The variety is suitable for fresh consumption and culinary processing, and can also be used as a pollinator.

The variety is not related to the Duchess of Oldenburg variety. In the past, it was widely distributed in Germany and Czechoslovakia, where it was recommended for orchards in cool regions. It served as the genetic basis for breeding the Alkmene, Clivia, and Ervin Baur varieties.
