The variety is part of the regional plant genetic heritage of Madeira and has been classified within the framework of local variety conservation projects. The name translates from the local dialect as "white apple". Genetic studies have confirmed that various clones with local distribution, including those on the Azores archipelago, can be found under this name.

The fruits of the variety are used in local culinary practices, in particular for the production of traditional cider. The variety is popular in the regional market of Madeira.
