Variety description

10 August 2026

The Redfield variety was obtained by crossing Wolf River and Malus niedzwetzkyana. The tree is characterized by vigorous growth, a spreading crown with drooping branches, bronze-red foliage, and pink flowers. The fruits are medium-sized, round-conical in shape, and have dark red skin, sometimes with a bloom. The flesh is colored red under the skin and near the core.

The variety is classified as a processing type, has a tart taste, and is not suitable for fresh consumption. It is used for the production of cider, jelly, and vinegar, imparting a pink hue and aroma to the products. The variety is characterized by high winter hardiness, resistance to scab and drought, however, the fruits have poor keeping quality.

The market also features the variety "Redfield Braeburn", which is a clone or sport of the Braeburn variety. This is a winter dessert variety with white or cream flesh, cylindrical fruits weighing 140–180 g, high keeping quality and transportability, which should not be confused with the American variety with red flesh.
