The variety is mentioned in scientific publications as a local genotype originating from Italian regions. Discussions exist in literature regarding its identification, as the name is often associated with the Reinette Rouge Étoilée variety; however, Renetta Rossa may also exist as an independent local form.

When compared with its close analogue, Reinette Rouge Étoilée, the fruits are characterized by an oblate-spherical shape and medium size. The coloration includes a yellow ground color with a bright red blush; the flesh is firm, fine-grained, yellowish in hue, with a tart taste. The harvest ripens at the end of September.
