The term originates from the French reinette and has historically been used to designate varieties whose fruits possess characteristic flavor qualities and flesh consistency. Since the name is a group designation, it does not describe parameters such as tree height, maturity dates, or winter hardiness.

In horticulture, many independent varieties are grouped under this name, such as Renet Simirenko, Renet Bergamotny, Landsbergsky renet, Renet Kubansky, and Renet Baumana. Each of them possesses its own morphological characteristics and agrotechnical requirements.
