This variety, known in official Portuguese lists as «Santiago Vermelho», is a product of folk selection. It is adapted to local climatic conditions and represents regional genetic material.

Currently, the variety is under the observation of the Viseu Agrarian Station as part of programs for the conservation of genetic diversity. Detailed morphological and agronomic characteristics are not described in open sources.
