The variety represents an improved form of the Stayman variety. The fruits are characterized by a bright scarlet skin, firm crisp white flesh, sometimes with a pinkish hue, and a rich sweet taste.

The tree is classified as an heirloom. There are private observations regarding the variability of growth characteristics, including signs of dwarfism in individual specimens, however, these are not a generally accepted standard for the variety.
