Varieties of the Schafsnase group (for example, Rheinische or Steirische Schafsnase) are ancient folk apple varieties that originated as chance seedlings. The trees are characterized by vigorous growth and are considered hardy to diseases, while requiring high-quality soils for a full harvest.

The fruits have a characteristic elongated conical shape and a firm yellow-orange skin with red stripes. The flesh is yellowish-white, juicy, with a pronounced acidity. The variety belongs to the autumn group: harvesting takes place in September, and the consumption period lasts until December.

Apples of this variety are versatile in use: they are suitable for fresh consumption, making juices, drying, and culinary purposes, in particular for baking strudels.
