The variety Sunspark (breeding number GS62) was obtained as a result of open pollination. Genetically, it is a descendant of the varieties Nicoter (Gala × Braeburn hybrid) and Honeycrisp (Keepsake × MN 1627 hybrid).

The fruits have a sweet-and-sour taste with a mild aroma and a sweet undertone, and are characterized by crisp, juicy flesh and a high capacity for long-term storage. Trees of this variety may possess low vigor.
