Most often, this name refers to the Rote Sternrenette variety. Its fruits are medium-sized, round or flattened-round, with dark red smooth skin covered with characteristic light star-shaped dots. The flesh is creamy white, often with red veins; the taste is sweet-sour and spicy. The tree is vigorous, with a winter maturity group, and the fruits keep until March.

The name is also applied to the Purpurroter Cousinot variety. This is a winter variety with small, intensely red fruits that, due to their decorative appearance, were traditionally used for decorating the Christmas tree. The variety is characterized by high keeping quality and can be stored until the beginning of summer.
