The TMF 421 variety was used as initial genetic material in the development of other varieties, such as PGI 215. In agricultural reports, the crop is classified as Alfalfa.

During variety trials, the variety demonstrated yield performance comparable to the control samples Ranger and Ladak. Data from 2005 trials classify TMF 421 as a variety with High Resistance (HR) to a number of diseases, and the variety is intended for use as a forage crop.
