The Horal sainfoin is intended for agricultural use as a fodder crop. It is often included in perennial legume-grass mixtures for the establishment of meadows and pastures.

As a variety of Onobrychis viciifolia, the crop possesses nutritional value and a high protein content. Its green mass does not cause bloat in ruminants. The plant is adapted to growth on calcareous, dry, and permeable soils, and possesses drought tolerance and a well-developed root system.
