The name refers to a group of sugar peas, denoted in French by the term mangetout, which literally means "eat everything". These varieties are cultivated to produce tender pods, devoid of an internal fibrous layer, which are consumed along with the seeds.
In agronomic practice, the name is used for modern varieties of French breeding that possess relative tolerance to a number of viral diseases transmitted by aphids. This designation appears in some official breeding lists, however, it is not a narrowly specialized trade name and may encompass various breeding lines.
