The Gundega variety was bred at the Institute of Horticulture in Dobele. Breeding was aimed at obtaining trees capable of withstanding severe winters and resistant to diseases characteristic of stone fruit crops in this region.
The fruits of the variety are being studied for the content of biologically active substances, in particular phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. The suitability of the harvest for industrial processing, including drying and the production of candied fruit, is being evaluated.
