The fruits have a flattened shape resembling a snuffbox or the planet Saturn. The fruit flesh is soft, sweet, most often white in color, and the stone is very small. The variety is traditionally grown in Italy, particularly on the slopes of Mount Etna, and has been known since the 19th century.

The fruits are consumed mainly fresh due to their distinct aroma. They are also used for making ice cream and granita. The variety is considered rare and requires careful transportation and packaging due to its delicate skin and flesh.
