A variety of German origin, bred around 1850. The tree is vigorous, reaching a height of 5–6 meters, with an upright or oval crown. Fruits are medium to large, purple-red, slightly elongated in shape, with firm, cartilaginous flesh.
Fruiting occurs in mid- to late July. The variety is self-incompatible; pollinators such as Büttners Rote Knorpelkirsche, Dönissen's Yellow Cartilaginous Cherry, or Schneiders Späte Knorpel are required for harvest. Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soils.
The fruits are for universal use: they are consumed fresh and are also used for making juices, jams, and confectionery products. The variety is frequently used in breeding work as a parent form.
