The Grolls Schwarze variety, also known by the synonyms Effeltricher, Gubener Schwarze, Hepsisauer Kurzstiel, and Bernsteinkirsche, originated in the 19th century in the German town of Guben. The plant is classified as a 'Knorpelkirsche', which means a sweet cherry with firm, cartilaginous flesh.

The variety is intended for fresh consumption. It is currently included in programs for the conservation of genetic diversity of fruit crops in Germany as an endangered variety.
