The name Petrokeraso translates from Greek as stone cherry. It is not a bred variety with a single author, but denotes a range of local forms adapted to the local soil and climatic conditions of Greece.

Morphological traits of these forms may vary. Studies including the Petrokeraso Tragano Achaias group note a relatively high fruit weight. These varieties are studied as genetic material for breeding programs.

Fruits of traditional forms are used primarily for fresh consumption in local markets.
