The variety is autochthonous and is grown primarily in the vicinity of the town of Lari. It is an ancient ecotype used mainly for fresh consumption and possesses a characteristic sweet fruity taste.

The variety has an S-allele genotype of S6S9, which determines its self-incompatibility and the need to select pollinator varieties with compatible genotypes. The variety is also known by the synonyms Francesina or Francia.
