Ulster fruits are large, turning almost black with a glossy skin finish upon full maturity. The flesh is characterized by juiciness and a sweet, rich flavor; the variety is suitable for the fresh market, freezing, and canning.

The trees of the variety are productive and can be grown in regions with harsh climates. The variety is self-incompatible and requires the presence of pollinator varieties, while being intersterile with the Kristin and Emperor Francis varieties.
