The tree of the variety has an upright habit, bearing fruit mainly on spurs and short shoots. The variety is self-incompatible (type S3S5).
The fruits are large, elongated in shape, with a very hard shell; the kernel yield is about 15%. The kernels are light-colored, wrinkled; the occurrence of double kernels is extremely rare or absent.
The variety has the synonyms Monstruoso, Carraxta, Grosse, Macrocarpa, and Alella. Currently, it is most often used in breeding research and genetic resource collections as a reference sample.
