The name MACROCARPA was used in 19th-century literature as a botanical description of an almond variety with large fruits. This name grouped almond forms cultivated in France, such as Amandier Sultane and Amandier Pistache, which were characterized by flowers up to 2 inches in diameter and fruits about 3 inches long.

In modern English-language horticultural literature, the MACROCARPA form is described as a self-incompatible plant requiring a pollinator. The tree blooms early in spring with pale pink or white flowers, produces soft-shelled nuts, and is characterized by an early harvest time occurring in August.
