The variety is a bud mutation of the commercial variety Nonpareil, the main difference of which is later flowering. This feature makes it possible to reduce the risk of flower damage by spring frosts and decrease vulnerability to certain diseases.
The fruits of the variety possess kernel quality similar to the parent variety, however, studies indicate a relatively low yield of this mutation. In global horticulture, Tardy Nonpareil has not become widespread as an independent commercial crop, serving the role of a late-flowering gene donor in the development of new varieties.
