Historically, the name is associated with peaches cultivated by indigenous peoples of North America and is sometimes described as a straw-yellow fruit with a brownish-red blush, ripening in the second half of July. The "Cherokee Snowball" variety is also mentioned.
In some highly specialized studies, the name "Cherokee" is encountered in relation to a nectarine, which is characterized by an early ripening period in mid-June, a relatively small fruit weight of less than 100 g, and average yield.
Given that many historical forms of peaches were propagated by seed, the stability of varietal traits for plants with this name is not guaranteed. The name "Cherokee" is often erroneously associated with tomato varieties that have pubescent fruits.
