The rootstock is a hybrid of peach and almond. Its primary purpose is to be used as a base for grafting peach varieties, as well as plum or cherry plum. Hybrids of this group are valued for their ability to adapt to various soil conditions, including calcareous soils.
The plant shows resistance to certain types of root-knot nematodes, such as Meloidogyne arenaria and Meloidogyne incognita, however, it is susceptible to Meloidogyne javanica. GF 557 served as genetic material for breeding other rootstocks, in particular the variety Sirio.
