The plant is a large, branched shrub 1.5 to 3 meters in height with heavily thorny shoots equipped with spines 1–1.5 cm long. The branches are strong and woody, which allows the bush to maintain its shape without the use of supports.
The fruits are about 1 cm in diameter and turn dark purple or almost black when ripe. The harvest ripens in July–August, often unevenly. The taste of the berries is described as being between that of gooseberry and blackcurrant; they are used more often in culinary processing than fresh.
The crop is characterized by winter hardiness and resistance to powdery mildew. Due to its density and the presence of thorns, the shrub can be used to create hedges. The plant can act as an intermediate host for rust affecting white pine, so it should not be planted near this tree species.
