Damask roses are ancient hybrids that originated in the Middle East. The York-and-Lancaster variety is known for its variegated white-and-pink flowers, while the Four-seasons rose is distinguished by its ability to bloom again in the autumn period, which made it the basis for breeding Portland roses.

The bushes of these roses are predominantly spreading and vigorous, reaching 1,5–2 meters in height, although Portland forms have more compact dimensions. Most varieties are summer-flowering; however, they possess high winter hardiness and are considered benchmark plants for the perfume industry due to the rich aroma of their essential oil.
