Breeding work on the line was started in 1881 based on the Probsteier and Pirna rye varieties. The historical variety «Petkuser Winterroggen» was characterized by prismatic or spindle-shaped ears of medium density and long oval grains of a greenish hue.
Plants of the historical variety were characterized by significant stem height and a tendency to lodging. Lines of the Petkus group are donors of important resistance genes, including the stem rust resistance gene Sr31. In modern agronomy, this genetic pool serves as a base for creating commercial high-yielding rye hybrids.
