The variety is a product of German breeding, based on the work of Ferdinand von Lochow using the Probsteier and Pirnaer varieties. The variety became widely distributed in breeding as source material for the creation of new genotypes.
Morphology is characterized by a prismatic ear shape of medium density and a long oval grain with a greenish hue. Stems are of medium or short length, and the variety is resistant to lodging. In conditions of harsh winters with little snow, a tendency to winterkill was noted, which required adaptation through crossing.
The variety was traditionally valued for its high milling and baking qualities. In modern research and genetic seed banks, it is classified as a landrace variety, used as a standard for studying the biodiversity and adaptability of cereal crops.
