The variety is a selection from a local rye population of the Mühlviertel region. The plant is characterized by a high straw height, traditional maturity timing, and high ecological adaptability to complex weather conditions, including heavy snowfall.
The variety is diploid and is distinguished by a relatively low yield, amounting to up to half that of modern hybrids. At the same time, the grain is characterized by a high protein content and low specific weight. The crop is used in both baking and the production of alcoholic beverages.
Due to its genetic characteristics, the variety is of value for breeding work, including the creation of male sterility systems. Currently, the variety is preserved at the Schlägl Monastery in Upper Austria.
