The variety belongs to the Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigenum group and is a landrace preserved in the Canary Islands since the 17th century. Genetically, this potato is related to varieties of Andean origin.

Tubers have a round or slightly compressed shape, dark red-purple, almost black skin, and light yellow flesh. The eyes of the tubers are shallow, and the sprouts are pale purple in color.

The potato is characterized by a dense texture and specific taste, due to which it is traditionally used for preparing the dish papas arrugadas.
