Bonäs is a potato landrace whose origin is associated with the introduction of seed material into Sweden in the 1720s. Its primary area of distribution is the historical province of Dalarna, as well as regions of Finland, where the variety is known as Vanha Punainen.
This potato is classified as a mid-season table variety. Since Bonäs is a landrace, it has not undergone modern industrial varietal registration, and therefore detailed agronomic characteristics, such as yield indicators or resistance to pathogens, are unavailable.
The variety has many synonyms used in various geographical locations, including Rättviks, Leksands, Våmhus, Röd Dala, and Rödpotatis. In the NordGen database, it is officially registered under the name Rättviks röd (number NGB 3019).
