The Koning variety was bred in 1966 in the Netherlands by specialists from Friese Mij. van Landbouw. It represents a historical object of breeding, and current agronomic characteristics or data on its modern cultivation are absent from reference materials.

The name Koning often leads to confusion because it translates from Dutch as 'king' and appears in various contexts related to the history of breeding companies. It is also likely that the name is confused with the modern potato variety Konnekt.
