The variety is a genetically related form of the classic Norwegian potato Gulløye. The tubers are characterized by deep eyes, which is reflected in the variety name, translated as "Red Golden Eye".
In cooking, the variety is valued for its ability to maintain its shape during boiling, particularly in stews, which distinguishes it from the floury original variety. The plant is adapted to the long daylight conditions of Northern Norway.
Like the base variety, Rød Gulløye can show sensitivity to viruses and fungal diseases, such as Phytophthora infestans. The variety is included in national programs for the conservation of genetic diversity, due to which its commercial distribution is limited.
