The variety was obtained as a result of breeding work as a seedling of the Victoria variety. In 1891, it was introduced to the general public, and in the early 1900s, it became the dominant variety in England, significantly displacing the previously popular Champion and Magnum Bonum varieties.
The variety is classified as a table potato. In early 20th-century literature, it is mentioned as one of the first hybrids to possess pronounced resistance to late blight. At present, the variety is not grown on an industrial scale and is of interest primarily to collectors and researchers of breeding history.
