A perennial herbaceous plant forming dense mats and spreading by means of stolons. The leaves are semi-evergreen, heart-shaped, deeply lobed and semi-glossy. The light green leaf blade is decorated with a purple pattern along the veins, and in the autumn-winter period it acquires copper-bronze or purple shades.

It blooms in spring from April to June with small white or pinkish-white flowers collected in upright raceme inflorescences. The plant is frost-hardy (USDA zones 4–9), prefers partial shade or shade and moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. It can be susceptible to powdery mildew; slugs and weevils are notable among pests.

Used as an ornamental groundcover for landscaping woodland gardens, borders and container plantings.
