The Selma variety is characterized by high yield among diploid red clover varieties, with the relative productivity of the sward increasing as it ages. The plant possesses excellent regrowth ability and exceptional winter hardiness, which makes it adapted to northern climatic conditions.

The quality of the variety's produce allows it to be effectively used in forage mixtures to increase the protein content in the diet. The variety is recommended for use in zones I–V in Finland.
