The variety has a complex pedigree, including genetic material from the lines Thatcher, Vilmorin 27, Petit Quinquin, Hybrid 40, Fortunato, and Mexique 50. The plant does not contain the modern semi-dwarfing genes Rht-B1 or Rht-D1, which is characteristic of tall traditional-type varieties.
In scientific research, the variety is used for the analysis of high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits and the study of mechanisms of resistance to yellow rust. In recent decades, Copain has been used primarily in breeding programs and projects studying root morphology and the genetic diversity of wheat.
