The classic winter wheat variety known as C.I. 4843 was used in global breeding as a donor of disease resistance genes, in particular the Bt2 gene, which provides immunity to common bunt. The variety was used as a differential for identifying races of loose smut and common bunt pathogens.
The commercial winter wheat variety introduced in the 1990s belonged to the feed wheat category. During trials of that period, the variety was characterized as having a certain resistance to diseases; however, its yield potential was assessed as lower compared to market leaders.
