The variety Tanori 71 was created by CIMMYT in cooperation with INIA by crossing Sonora 64, Ciano 67 and Inia 66. The plant is characterized as short-statured, early-maturing, with good straw strength resistant to lodging.
During the period of its active use, the variety demonstrated resistance to certain races of leaf rust and stem rust. In some regions, for example in Bangladesh, the variety was susceptible to spike sterility. Currently, it is used primarily as genetic material for breeding in most countries.
