Cando became the first semi-dwarf durum wheat variety released by the NDSU experiment station, which was the result of a long-term research program. Its genotype contains genes responsible for reducing stem height.

The variety was widely used in breeding as a parent form, in particular, in the creation of the Lloyd variety. Its grain was studied for gliadin composition and gluten characteristics necessary for pasta production. Cando was also studied for genetic resistance to pests, such as the Hessian fly.
