The variety is of Italian origin and was bred in the second half of the 20th century. Its pedigree includes the Capeiti, Valnova, Patricio, and Valforte lines, which ensured high yield and stability of characteristics for the variety.

Cannizzo is intended for the production of semolina and pasta. The variety shows high resistance to certain races of rust and is widely used in scientific research on gluten composition and allergenicity as a reference object. It is cultivated in Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, and North African countries.
