This population is an ancient local variety (landrace) adapted to the conditions of Sicily. Plants reach a height of 125–135 cm. The variety belongs to the early-ripening group with a vegetation period of about 130 days, which allows for sowing in late winter or early spring.
The population is characterized by high drought tolerance, but is inferior to modern breeding varieties in terms of yield. The grain is used in the production of traditional bakery and pasta products, and possesses specific organoleptic properties and a high protein content.
