This crop is not a breeding variety, but a traditional landrace population that has been grown in Sicily for centuries. The wheat belongs to the type of 'marzuolo' varieties with a short vegetation cycle, traditionally sown in late winter or early spring.

The plant is characterized by thin stems and a high tillering capacity, exhibiting high resistance to drought conditions. The population includes forms with black and white awns, with Riminia corresponding to the variety with black awns. The grain is small and dark, used for the production of traditional bread and other products.
